Granules was premiered by Johnny Chang in New Zealand. In addition to the playing of the violin, the performer places a thin layer of sand on the stage floor and gently rubs his foot upon it as marked in the score to produce a sound accompaniment.

Granules is the first piece of an ongoing series that makes up a collection entitled Formes dévoilées. The title, Formes dévoilées, refers to the stark formal ideas that are at play and that are clear to perceive in each piece during performances. One of the goals is to make form the poetry of the piece. By featuring the formal structure of the music with this much emphasis, it becomes the focal point; the point where we can be drawn in, and experience the piece for its form's sake. This, in turn, inspired the idea of reducing the materials as much as possible, so that the structure becomes so strong that it is perceived at a visceral level. The practice of reduction is one that has been of great value, its application in other compositional situations have helped distill musical elements to their purest form. Granules acknowledges the phenomenon of elements clustering within chaotic systems, like at traffic lights.
